ON VIEW @ Lowside: Eternal Return - Benjamin Young

OPENING RECEPTION MAY 22ND

Artist Show Statement:

Having nearly a century of familial roots in Marin County, I often found myself imagining relatives traveling the same roads and noticing some version of the same gradual, seasonal shifts and minutiae in the landscape as I did while out making these photographs. Eternal Return is comprised of images made in and around my old home in Fairfax, on weekend drives to and from my childhood home in Sonoma County on Marin backroads, or on any of the countless day trips west I made while living there. Set against the lush backdrop of Marin where walls separating the domestic and natural worlds blur, this body of photographs explores connection to the landscape through themes of home, seasonal cycles, day & night, birth & death, ephemerality & memory.

Bio:

Benjamin Young is a photographer born, raised and still based in Northern California. He obtained a BFA in photography in 2025 at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. His personal practice primarily based in B&W film photography and silver gelatin printing. His work falls into the realm of poetic documentary. He has a deep rooted relationship to the California landscape and often focuses his work on that relationship.

Art Show: JJ Ignotz Photography

Join us for the Opening Reception of JJ Ignotz Photography at Woods Lowside!

From the artist:

“It’s not far off to say that every great photographer or artist has, at some point, photographed flowers. They’re naturally beautiful, easily accessible, and each one is unique in its own right. Observing how light falls across them is an essential practice in many art forms. I once shared a creative space in Chelsea, NY, with a dear friend who happened to be a florist, giving me access to all sorts of flowers—which I also got to watch slowly die in my presence.

We all know how beautiful flowers can be in life, but I was always fascinated by how they shrink and shrivel into new organic shapes as they die. During COVID, I used my free time to work on personal projects, something I was not accustomed to. I had always been inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe’s flower photography and decided to use my creative skills to create dramatic portraits of dead and dying flowers.

What you see displayed here are my favorite selections from that series. Most of the flowers came from the NYC flower market or from municipal flower pots, which I would secretly pick during long walks in the COVID era. These prints are presented on metal with a matte finish and framed in wood.”

Closing Art Show for @designsbyjusy

"Hi, I’m Justine Escalada! Growing up, my family called me Jusy, so I thought it was fitting to create an art brand named Designs by Jusy. I live in the Richmond District with my husband, pug and toddler. My favorite thing about my neighborhood is being surrounded by parks and beaches.

This body of work is a small selection from my Floral and San Francisco Collections. The majority of the imagery I gravitate toward is inspired by this beautiful city, its landmarks and the greenery that thrives among this metropolis."
